Shooting — Hind Algergawi
Hind Algergawi is the only female skeet shooter in the United Arab Emirates. An Emirati athlete based in Dubai, she trains at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club and competes in ISSF Olympic Skeet (Women).
What is skeet?
Olympic skeet is a clay-target shooting discipline built around speed, timing and precision. Targets are launched from two opposing houses as athletes move through eight stations around the field.
The Field
A skeet field has eight shooting stations arranged around a semicircle with a radius of 19.20 metres. Stations 1 to 7 are positioned around the arc and are approximately 8.13 metres apart, while Stations 4 and 8 are positioned along the centre of the field. The base of the field measures 36.80 metres across.
The Gun
Olympic skeet athletes typically use a 12-gauge over-and-under shotgun. Instead of firing a single projectile, each cartridge contains a number of small pellets. One of the defining features of Olympic skeet is that the athlete cannot wait for the target with the shotgun already mounted to the shoulder. Before calling for the target, the shooter must remain in the official READY position, with the stock touching the body and the toe of the stock on or below the ISSF marker on the shooting vest. The gun is mounted only after the target appears.
Competition Equipment
A skeet athlete's core equipment includes a shotgun, competition cartridges, shooting vest, shooting glasses, hearing protection, and appropriate sporting clothing and footwear. The shooting vest is particularly important in Olympic skeet because it carries the official ISSF marker tape used by referees to check the athlete's READY position. The marker is permanently attached to the vest and determines how high the stock may be held before the target appears. Eye and ear protection are also mandatory. Shotgun athletes must wear shatterproof shooting glasses and suitable hearing protection while shooting.
A Round & How It Is Won
A round consists of 25 targets shot across the eight stations. Athletes face both singles and doubles, receiving one point for every target broken. International qualification consists of five rounds, giving a maximum score of 125. The highest-ranked athletes progress to the final.
